The One World
Centre is funded by Oxfam and the Government’s
Department for International Development (DfID). Dundee City
Council, which owns the property we occupy, allows us reduced
rent because of the educational contribution we make to
life-long learning in the city.
Oxfam
funds the One World Centre (and others working in
development education) because it takes a long-term view of
education as a valuable way of working towards its ultimate
goal of eradicating world poverty. Development Education
or Education for Global Citizenship challenges
stereotypes, advocates equality in resource and power
distribution, encourages sustainable development, promotes
peaceful solutions to conflicts, celebrates diversity, and helps
people to understand the causes of poverty and the complexity of
the global issues we face.
Oxfam believes
that Education for Global Citizenship is essential in
helping young people rise to the challenges they face now and in
the future. Oxfam has funded us since 1995, and their grant
supports this work in local schools. Details of current
projects can be read about in the
Annual Report for Schools.
We are in
receipt of a DfID mini-grant for a project entitled ‘Discovering
and Shaping our World.’ This is a three-year programme to
incorporate global issues into the work of voluntary youth
organisations. Details are available in the
Annual Report for Youth and Community.
The One World
Centre also receives funding from DfID via the IDEAS network for
its contribution to the Global Education Strategy for Scotland.
This is part of a UK-wide initiative to ‘Enable Effective
Support’ to teachers to deliver a global education to children
and young people. |
